Stealing Homes?
NW Washington, DC Homes for Sale or Stolen? There was an article in the Washington Post (3/13/08) that interested me and I wanted to summarize it and give a quick reaction to it. It starts with two N.W. Washington, DC Homes for Sale or Homes that were stolen I should say. One of the homes is located on California St. N.W. in the Kalorama neighborhood and the other home is located on 10th St. N.W. Washington, DC in the Shaw area. The article talks about how an elaborate scheme was created to forge deeds and steel two vacant homes in Washington, DC. There were several parties involved in the scheme and the FBI is still investigating this issue. Essentially several people forged deeds, drivers licenses, homes for sale when in fact they were not and got away with closing on properties that were never on the market. The actual owners of these two homes only found out about this when one neighbor noticed a real estate agent of the preoperty. The other thought something was suspicious when he began getting mail at his home with someone else name. My question is this, how did these people expect to really get away with it? I mean over the short term I guess they did get away with it since the transaction did in fact close on these two properties. Did they not think that one day the true owners would find out that there home has been stolen? People are getting bolder and bolder these days. Is the Real Estate market so bad that people have resort to stealing homes now? In a way I guess this is funny in a twisted sort of way, however I cant imagine the true owners think so since they have had to pay an enormous amount of money litigating to get there homes back. PS: I have many Homes for Sale in Washington, DC, that are in fact for sale and trust me the owners are aware of this.
